Mad About Mud Flotilla Returns to Celebrate and Protect the Gunpowder River

JOPPATOWNE, MD — The Gunpowder River community once again gather for the Mad About Mud 2nd Flotilla, a lively blend of recreation, environmental awareness, and local advocacy centered at Mariner Point Park.
The morning begins at the park pavilion, where volunteers prepare to welcome participants arriving by land and water. Kayaks, canoes, and small boats launch from Mariner Point Park and other points along the river, converging at the railroad bridge before making their way as a unified flotilla toward the boat ramp. Paddlers are encouraged to raft up with nearby boats, creating a friendly, communal atmosphere as they travel together.
Upon reaching the park, the group gathers on the water for a brief update on the health of the Gunpowder River. The program with welcoming remarks, setting the stage for two featured speakers who highlight ongoing conservation efforts.

• Theaux Le Gardeur, Gunpowder Riverkeeper, shares insights into current challenges and protections affecting the watershed.
• Councilwoman Nolanda Robert offers her support for the cause and presents the group with a Proclamation from the County Council of Harford County.
The celebration continues with a reception featuring local environmental organizations, including the Gunpowder Riverkeeper, Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, and Mid‑Atlantic Nature Therapy. Attendees met representatives, learn about volunteer opportunities, and connect with neighbors who share a commitment to preserving the river.
The Mad About Mud Flotilla has quickly become a signature community tradition — part paddle, part environmental rally, and entirely dedicated to protecting the waterways that define the region.
